Dear Manorhaven Families,

We have much to look forward to now that spring is right around the corner!  If watching all the tulips and daffodils peek out of the ground inspires you to get your hands dirty, please consider volunteering for the Grounds Beautification Committee to help prepare our school courtyard for the classes that will surely be gardening in a few weeks!

As always, we hope you continue to visit our PTA website often as we have many more fun events planned in the upcoming months.  We know how important it is to stay connected to your school!

This year, more than ever, the PTA needs your help.  Funds raised through the PTA provides learning opportunities that may have otherwise been unavailable to our children.  As the school year continues, we are mindful that your support as well as your participation is essential to a successful PTA.  Whether you have 30 minutes or a couple of hours, please know that your ideas, your time and your talents are truly needed.  Keep in mind that by volunteering, you will get to enjoy interacting with the kids, become friends with other parents, and accomplish things that really make a difference.  The PTA welcomes you to join our meetings to raise your concerns and contribute your ideas and talents to better our school.
We would like to thank you in advance for your support.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We look forward to seeing you at the next PTA meeting!

Sincerely,
Robin McDermott and Becky Schamis
Manorhaven PTA Co-Presidents

Books of the Year

Picture
Have you Filled a Bucket Today?

A few years ago during the Welcome Back Assembly, the children of Manorhaven were introduced to a special book...Have You Filled A Bucket Today?, by Carol McCloud.  This book has a wonderful message of spreading kindness that exemplifies the "Manorhaven Way."  The book explains how we all carry an invisible bucket around with us that is filled by kind thoughts and gestures by the people we interact with each day.  We strive to be "Bucket Fillers" and spread kindness.  We don't want to be "Bucket Dippers" who are bullies and mean to others.  This heartwarming book gives examples of how each of us can be "Bucket Fillers," every day as we express kindness, appreciation and love through the "Bucket Fill-osophy".

This year at the Welcome Back Assembly, the children were introduced to two more books; Zero by Kathryn Otoshi and Stand Up by Lisa Roth, M.D. and Karen Siris, Ed.D.  The Manorhaven Marvels and Ms. Dignity also visited Manorhaven School to teach us all about the Dignity Act.

Zero

Picture
Zero is a big round number. When she looks at herself, she just sees a hole right in her center. Every day she watches the other numbers line up to count: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 . . . !" "Those numbers have value. That's why they count," she thinks. But how could a number worth nothing become something? Zero feels empty inside. She watches One having fun with the other numbers. One has bold strokes and squared corners. Zero is big and round with no corners at all. "If I were like One, then I can count too," she thinks. So she pushes and pulls, stretches and straightens, forces and flattens herself, but in the end she realizes that she can only be Zero. As budding young readers learn about numbers and counting, they are also introduced to accepting different body types, developing social skills and character, and learning what it means to find value in yourself and in others.

Stand Up

Picture
In this important story, a young boy appreciates the value of having welcoming and caring friends. He decides to make life better for a classmate who is not as fortunate. Noticing that most children are compassionate, he gathers a group together to form a Caring Majority and successfully prevents a child from being bullied, ultimately creating a positive change in his school. This story gives teachers and parents an opportunity to have a conversation with children about empathy and about how upstanders can play a major role in bullying prevention.
